Medical Students

Medical students have the opportunity to meet and work with our program faculty and residents through rotations and workshops.

Medical Student Rotations

The St. John's Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program hosts a number of medical student rotations at either the clinic or the hospital. Because this provides a more substantial experience than an interview allows for, many applicants have found such rotations helpful in determining whether the program is a good fit for them.

On the clinic-based Primary Care Clerkship, medical students spend half of the time paired up with faculty physicians providing care to their regular panel of patients. The rest of the time, medical students are matched with residents providing care to same day or open access patients. Other residents in clinic may also share interesting cases with medical students as time allows. Hospital-based rotations that are available include Cardiovascular Medicine in the Community Hospital and Inpatient Family Medicine. While scheduling preference is shown to University of Minnesota medical students, students from other medical schools are welcome to rotate through our program. If you are interested in scheduling one of these rotations, please contact Judy Hillstrom at 612-624-0452 or by e-mail hills007@umn.edu

Workshops

The St. John's Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program periodically works with the Family Medicine Interest Group to host and/or staff workshops in casting, suturing, etc. Residents and faculty work as educators at these events.

Recruitment Socials

During the active recruitment season, we hold social gatherings for faculty, residents, and applicants, allowing applicants to get to know the program in a casual atmosphere. These are held at TGI Friday's Restaurant, located near the southwest corner of White Bear Avenue and County Road D in Maplewood, close to Maplewood Mall. Beverages and appetizers will be provided. Residency applicants are welcome and encouraged to attend.
