Call

The St. John's program handles call differently than most programs. All rotations end at 5:00 pm and do not extend into the weekend. All "after hours" rotational, hospital, and clinic responsibilities are performed by the call team consisting of a first-year resident (R1) and a second- or third-year resident (R2) with faculty supervision available. Weekday house officer responsibilities are assigned to an R2 on an in-patient rotation.

After hours call is typically one in five nights for R1 and one in 12 nights for R2. If you are not on call, your evenings and weekends are free.

For call responsibilities and more, see Ye Olde Intern Manual.

"I was on call the very first day of residency and got blood and amniotic fluid in my eyes during a delivery. I then spent the next one and a half hours in the ER for my post-exposure evaluation. A word to the wise: wear your safety goggles."

- Amanda Tembreull, class of 2008
