Family Medicine Clinic

The University of Minnesota Physicians' Phalen Village Clinic is located four miles from the residency program's suburban hospital, in a lower-middle-class residential community with a well-established, ethnically diverse patient population. The state-of-the-art facility has 20 exam rooms, three procedure rooms, a complete lab, x-ray, surgical facilities, ultrasound capability, and a conference room. It provides a large resident room with desk space for each resident.

The program faculty and clinical preceptors have a wealth of practice experience in both rural and metropolitan areas and provide expertise in the entire spectrum of family medicine clinical care. The behavioral medicine faculty, comprised of a psychiatrist and a family therapist, works with residents to promote a thorough, holistic approach to patient care. Two psychology fellows contribute to the care of the clinic's high need patient population. Office procedures taught in the clinic include colposcopy, OB ultrasound, nasal pharyngoscopy, vasectomy, skin biopsy, and other excision techniques. Residents' clinic patients include newborns, children, teens, adults, the elderly, and those residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

To ensure adequate communication with our non-English speaking patients, Hmong and Spanish interpreters are available among the clinic staff. Outside interpreter services are also contracted as needed.

Phalen Village Clinic has been selected for the Reader's Choice Awards through the Lillie Suburban Newspaper as the Best Place for Health Care on the East Side in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
