Community

Our community's population includes college students, professors, underserved groups, the elderly, and immigrants. Some of the ethnic groups making their homes here are Hispanic, Hmong, and recent East African immigrants; the area also is home to Native Americans, European Americans, and African Americans. Smiley's Clinic has served the community's needs for over 30 years.  Faculty, residents, and staff have enjoyed the opportunity to provide care for and interact with this diverse community. Community Involvement
Residents and faculty participate in community celebrations and summer festivals, such as the King's Fair and La Feria. The events offer food, music, art, and a variety of informational and service booths sponsored by local resources, businesses, and organizations.

Resident Community Health Talks
Residents present health talks to community members at Augsburg College, Seward Towers, a nearby apartment complex, and the Brian Coyle Community Center during the first-year community family medicine rotation. Topics presented have included hypertension, health screening, hepatitis, osteoporosis, first aid, arthritis, stress management, and memory loss.
