For all seven University of Minnesota Family Medicine Residency Programs, register with the National Resident Matching Program, and then apply through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) by Dec.
31, 2008. See below for information about application requirements, international medical graduates criteria,
couples matching, submitting an application for possible off-cycle or PGY2 positions, and checking on your
application status.

Applicant Criteria
The Mankato, Methodist, North Memorial, Smiley's, St. John's, and St. Joseph's residency programs share the
same criteria:
- U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for a
J-1 visa
- Graduated from medical school within the last five years or have been working as a physician within
the last three years
- ECFMG certified, if international medical graduate
- Minimum of one year of U.S. clinical experience
- Passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 exams, all within two tries on each exam
- Have a maximum of two unsuccessful attempts on all USMLE exams
- Able to complete USMLE Step 3 within five years of passing USMLE Step 2 (CK)
St. Cloud has the following
criteria:
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Less than eight years since graduated from medical school or direct patient care experience
- Verified clinical experience in the U.S.
- A current ECFMG certificate is required if international medical graduate
- USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills taken no more than two times
- All other USMLE or COMLEX exams taken no more than three times
- Able to pass USMLE Step 3 within five years of passing USMLE Step 2 (CK)
- Applications accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)

PGY2 Openings
To be considered for possible off-cycle or PGY2 positions,

- Personal statement that includes reason for off-cycle start or pursuing change in residency
programs
- CV
- USMLE and/or COMLEX transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation written within last year
- Medical school transcript
- Dean's Letter or Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- The current or previous program director's contact information with consent for us to contact him or
her
- A list of rotations completed at current or previous residency
- ECFMG Certification
