During the second and third years, the resident becomes more involved with the care of patients from the family medicine clinic.
Residents follow their own patients, both in the clinic and on labor and delivery, and may follow them on admission to the hospital in conjunction with our own family medicine service. A clinic preceptor supervises admissions, and is available for consultation at any time, promoting continuing educational opportunities and support.
Each second-year resident is generally in the family medicine clinic two to four half-days per week. Third-year residents spend more time in the family medicine clinics averaging three to five half-days per week. When not in clinic, residents are on rotations in family medicine and other specialties.
Electives built into the third year help residents personalize their educational program. Most electives occur in the third year, at which time tailoring can be done in an informed manner taking into account future practice needs. Further discussion of electives .
