Unopposed Family Medicine Residency at North Memorial
The University of Minnesota North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program has 30 residents with ten in each class and is the only full-time physician training program at the hospital. Residents are University of Minnesota employees with all the benefits of an academic leader in family medicine education.

Unique features of North Memorial adding to its strength as a training institution are:

  • Family medicine residents are the only residents at the hospital
  • Family medicine is the largest single specialty on the hospital staff
  • 35+ years of teaching family medicine
  • High-volume, high-risk maternity care including C-section experience
  • Extensive ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing ambulance service
  • Associated services that enhance continuity of care, including clinical pathologists and radiologists; large social service staff; physical and occupational therapy; diabetic, nutritional, and other educational services; pastoral care; extensive library
  • Over 25% of our graduates practice out of this hospital after completing residency

About the Hospital
  • Level I trauma center
  • Emergency medicine department (77, 511 patient visits in 2006) serving as a regional trauma center and serviced by NMHC's air/ground transport
  • Primary care based tertiary care center
  • Obstetrics service has over 300 deliveries a month—many are high risk; high percentage of family physician deliveries
  • Level III neonatal special care unit, offering complete care to the premature or severely ill newborn
  • Three intensive care units: medical/surgical, trauma/neuro, and cardiovascular
  • 26-bed acute psychiatric unit
  • Upper Midwest Limb Reattachment Center
  • Women's center with mobile mammography service

About the Clinic

  • 30,000 patient visits per year, including the clinic, nursing home visits, and hospitalized patients
  • Mental health and social services on site
  • Reach Out and Read program
  • HIV outreach
  • Collaborative care—multi-discipline team visits
  • Group visits
  • Prenatal, parenting, and smoking cessation classes
  • Patients are seen by appointment or on an emergency/urgent care basis
  • 32 examination rooms, two procedure rooms, and OB room for fetal monitoring and ultrasound
  • Laboratory and minor surgery room, and capabilities for x-ray, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ultrasound, spirometry, nasolaryngoscopy, and colposcopy
  • 1,000-square-foot residents' room includes library and computers with access to Medline literature searches and Internet
  • We are implementing an electronic health record in phases
