Park Nicollet / Methodist Hospital

Park Nicollet Health Services is a nonprofit integrated care delivery system. It is known as a leader in the national health care community and has been the recipient of many awards. We are one of a select few medical providers in the United States pioneering the use of the Toyota Production System, also known as Lean Production, in health care. Residents have the opportunity to be involved with Lean Process Improvements and contribute to Park Nicollet Health Services’ business strategy.

Park Nicollet also has a fully integrated electronic medical record, one of the first in the metro area. This allows us to access patient information from any clinic site, Methodist Hospital, or home.

Methodist Hospital
Methodist Hospital is a 426-bed facility with more than 1,000 physicians on the medical staff.

Areas of strength include:

• Maternity—Approximately 3,000 births annually at Methodist Hospital and residents participate in some way with the majority of these. Our residents also attend an average of 200 births prior to graduation.
• Emergency Center—We are a level 2 trauma center with approximately 35,000 visits annually.
• Cardiology—Methodist opened a state of the art Heart and Vascular Center in 2005. Methodist has one of the lowest mortality rates nationally for coronary bypass surgery and has been named one of the nation’s 100 Best Cardiovascular Hospitals.
• Neuro-rehabilitation program—Methodist is a regional leader in stroke and Parkinson treatment. Residents participate on house call in “code 99s,” the emergency stroke assessment and treatment team.

Park Nicollet Clinic
Park Nicollet Clinic is a nationally known multispecialty clinic and one of the largest in the United States. The main campus is located one mile east of Methodist Hospital, and there are 24 neighborhood locations serving Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs. Creekside, our residency clinic, is one of these neighborhood clinics and is located just across Minnehaha Creek from Methodist Hospital, an easy and beautiful walk from the hospital.

Park Nicollet Foundation
Park Nicollet Foundation was chartered to help build healthy communities. The Foundation supports a number of residency initiatives including:

• Central Clinic—free walk-in clinic in St. Louis Park for children and teens, staffed by our third-year residents
• No Shots, No School—state-wide initiative to ensure all children are vaccinated
• Children’s Reading Initiative—provides a free book to a child having an office visit at Creekside
• St. Mary’s Health Clinics—program which allows us to provide free care to some patients at Creekside and helps those families obtain medical insurance

These initiatives helped earn St. Louis Park the distinction of being one of America’s Promise Best Communities for Young People in 2005.

Foundation grants are available to residents for qualifying research and educational projects—for example, a 2005 research project compared services available for pregnant teens in New Zealand with those available in the local area.

Park Nicollet Institute
Park Nicollet Institute engages in research, education, and innovation to improve quality and public and private decision-making in health and health care. It includes the Health Education Center, the International Diabetes Center, the Health Research Center, and Supporting Best Care. Residency faculty are deeply involved in coordinating continuing medical education programs for Park Nicollet and in research through the Institute. Jeremy Springer, MD, is the director of medical professional education at the Institute.
