First Year House Call

First year call is entirely in-house at Methodist Hospital. The first year call experience is clearly one of our program's strengths, as residents quickly gain experience in evaluating and managing a wide range of acute medical problems. With the exception of the two-month OB rotation, call averages every fifth night. Admission call is usually not taken for the service that the resident is on for the month, so late night hospital admissions are minimal.

• The first-year resident's primary responsibility while on call is rapid initial evaluation of hospitalized patients who have had an acute status change.  The coverage includes both the residency family medicine service as well as the large population of patients managed by family medicine and internal medicine physicians from the many Park Nicollet clinic sites.
• The resident serves as the leader of the code team for both pediatric and adult codes. Residents are certified in ACLS and NRP before beginning residency and become comfortable managing critically ill patients early in the first year. (The second- or third-year resident on clinic call stays in the hospital with you during July to provide assistance and support.)
• The first-year call room is used exclusively by our residents. Amenities include private bathroom and shower, lockers, a small library, television/VCR, a small refrigerator, and computer access.
