Curriculum
80% of your time is devoted to your fellowship training activities: coursework, research projects, article and grant writing, attending national meetings.
20% of your time (one day/week) is spent in clinical practice at one of our family medicine clinics to help you remain current in your clinical skills. We try to place you in a clinical setting matching your research interest areas.
First Year
- Three courses/semester in family medicine basic research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and curriculum design
- Integration seminar—discuss research challenges and progress, time management, etc. with fellowship director and faculty
- Establish goals with mentoring team, consisting of a family medicine research faculty member, faculty in your interest area, and fellowship coordinator
- HIPAA (research information privacy) and Responsible Conduct of Research training
- Develop thesis research project
- National conference
- One day/week in clinic
Second Year
- Public health courses
- Integration Seminar
- University of Minnesota grant-writing workshop
- Library workshops, emphasizing electronic database searching
- Scholarly writing seminar emphasizing journal article development
- Thesis research project – we have a statistician and research professionals to assist you in addition to your thesis advisor
- National conference
- One day/week in clinic
Third Year
- Advanced methods coursework in your research topic area (as needed), thesis credits
- Integration and scholarly writing seminars
- Complete research project
- Write and defend thesis in clinical research
- Write a peer-reviewed journal article and grant proposal
- Present your research at a national conference
- One day/week in clinic
