Curriculum


80% of your time is devoted to your fellowship training activities: coursework, research projects, article and grant writing, attending national meetings.

20% of your time (one day/week) is spent in clinical practice at one of our family medicine clinics to help you remain current in your clinical skills. We try to place you in a clinical setting matching your research interest areas.

First Year

  • Three courses/semester in family medicine basic research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and curriculum design
  • Integration seminar—discuss research challenges and progress, time management, etc. with fellowship director and faculty
  • Establish goals with mentoring team, consisting of a family medicine research faculty member, faculty in your interest area, and fellowship coordinator
  • HIPAA (research information privacy) and Responsible Conduct of Research training
  • Develop thesis research project
  • National conference
  • One day/week in clinic

 Second Year

  • Public health courses
  • Integration Seminar
  • University of Minnesota grant-writing workshop
  • Library workshops, emphasizing electronic database searching
  • Scholarly writing seminar emphasizing journal article development
  • Thesis research project – we have a statistician and research professionals to assist you in addition to your thesis advisor
  • National conference
  • One day/week in clinic

 Third Year

  • Advanced methods coursework in your research topic area (as needed), thesis credits
  • Integration and scholarly writing seminars
  • Complete research project
  • Write and defend thesis in clinical research
  • Write a peer-reviewed journal article and grant proposal
  • Present your research at a national conference
  • One day/week in clinic
