Sexual Dysfunctions, Paraphilias, and Their Relationship to Childhood Abuse in Men Who Have Sex with Men
Stacey Seibel, PhD, conducted this study, which had two aims: First, to describe the sexual functioning concerns and sexual paraphilias in a convenience sample of 576 men who have sex with men (MSM) using DSM criteria adapted as necessary for this population; and second, to investigate the relationship between childhood abuse and sexual dysfunctions and paraphilias in adulthood in this population. Co-authors: B. R. Simon Rosser, PhD, MPH, Keith Horvath, PhD, Clarice D. Evans, MA.

Sex and the Heart of a Woman
Karin Larsen, PhD, is conducting a review of studies investigating the relationship between sexual function and heart disease in women. Until recently, relatively few studies focused on women with heart disease as it was considered a man’s disease. Research indicates that male sexual dysfunction is linked to risk for heart disease. Determining whether such a link also exists for women may be important in preventing cardiac morbidity and mortality for women. Co-authors: Bean Robinson, PhD, Mike Miner, PhD, and Shana Hamilton, PhD.

All Gender Health: Seminars for Minnesota’s Transgender Community
Walter Bockting, PhD, is the lead investigator of this innovative HIV/STI prevention education program that addresses transgender-specific risks in the context of comprehensive sexuality education. The project is funded as part of a larger grant from the Minnesota Department of Health. Two weekend seminars are planned for 2007 and 2008. As part of this intervention program, a DVD of the transgender coming out process was produced entitled Transgender Stories. For further information, please contact Dr. Bockting at bock001@umn.edu or by phone 612-625-1500.

B4REAL
Bean Robinson, PhD, is the lead investigator for B4REAL, a research project looking at how African American men practice safer sex.

Minnesota Community PROMISE/PLUS
Bean Robinson, PhD, is the lead investigator for Minnesota Community PROMISE/PLUS, a research project that is a collaboration between the Minneapolis Urban League and the Program in Human Sexuality. The goal is to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS through encouraging African American men who have sex with men to use condoms and build healthy lives through a program in which men reach out to their community, friends, and family using stories about how they made changes to start practicing safer sex.

Roots of Sexual Abuse
Mike Miner, PhD, is the lead investigator of this CDC-funded study. The study will apply attachment theory to identify the unique and shared risk factors for adolescents perpetrating child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and delinquent behavior. It is a multi-method, cross-sectional study of 300 adolescent males who have sexually abused children, sexually assaulted peers or adults, and/or committed other types of criminally delinquent behavior. Participants are recruited from agencies in both urban and rural Minnesota. Data is collected through available records, interviews, and a computer-administered questionnaire.
