| Physician and Patient I (Clinical Medicine I) |
Six half-day sessions on Thursday afternoons. Up to two students. |
First-year medical students learning history-taking skills. |
Shadowing. As skill level of student increases, student may perform limited history. Objective is essentially to expose student to fundamental aspects of interview and physical exam. Regular discussion of patient care issues with student. |
| Physician and Patient III (Clinical Medicine III) |
Wednesday, whole day. Six-week blocks, December through the end of April. |
Second-year medical students. Honing H & P skills that have already been learned; initial attempts at formulations of problem lists. |
Perform history and physical examination of patients in an office setting, supervised by the preceptor. Focus on the development of oral presentation skills, formulation of problem lists, and focused data gathering. Regular feedback on student performance. Mentorship of student with a positive learning environment. |
| Primary Care Clerkship (Clinical Medicine IV) |
Seven half-days per week minimum. In four-week blocks, year round. |
Third- or fourth-year medical students. Required clerkship experience. |
The whole package—history-taking, physical exam, ability to focus according to patient complaint, synthesis of problem list, patient management skills, oral presentations, and writing/dictation of medical records. Encouraged to go on NH rounds, patient rounds in hospital, and to take call (optional) with preceptors. Regular feedback to student, as well as discussion of patient issues on a regular basis. |
