Insurance and Health Coverage*

Health Insurance

  • Choice of two plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Nearly half of family coverage paid
  • Option for domestic partner family coverage

Dental Insurance

  • Available for residents and their families

Life Insurance

  • $50,000 of group term life insurance provided at no cost
  • Additional life insurance coverage for up to $150,000 available at an additional cost to resident, his/her spouse or domestic partner, or children at reduced group rates

Long-term Disability

  • Coverage provides up to 80% of pre-disability stipend after a 90-day waiting period

Short-term Disability

  • Coverage provides up to 70% of pre-disability stipend after a 14-day waiting period

Malpractice Insurance

  • Coverage provided for activities within the course and scope of resident duties at no cost

Flexible Spending Account

  • Eligible for pre-tax health care and dependant care reimbursement benefits—not subject to federal, state, or social security taxes

*Duluth, Methodist, and St. Cloud residency program benefits may vary.

Vacation and Leaves

Vacation

  • 15 days per contract year—cannot be carried over to next year

Sick Leave

  • Short periods of sick leave available at the program director’s discretion

Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption Leave

  • Six weeks paid maternity leave; two weeks paid paternity or adoption leave upon request

Prenatal/Newborn Elective

  • May be taken by male or female residents who have a child born or adopted during their residency training (two- to six-week elective)

Miscellaneous Leave

  • Extended periods of leave available at the program director’s discretion; may extend residency and postpone board exam eligibility

Life Support Courses

  • Certification and recertification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation

Workshops

  • Sports Medicine, Primary Care Psychiatry, Colposcopy, Community Health, Ultrasound, Occupational Medicine, Practice Management/Systems-based Practice, Sexual Counseling, Family Medicine Procedures, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®), and USA Soccer Cup Sports Medicine

Grand Rounds
Allows residents the opportunity to:

  • Learn original research findings applied to a clinical scenario
  • Problem solve clinical vignettes with evidence-based findings
  • Consider topics of relevance to family medicine in an academic context

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

  • Each resident given three days per year at the program director’s discretion

Family Medicine Update
Five-day conference provided for third-year residents at no cost

  • Focuses on health, prevention, and behavior change in the face of chronic illness
  • Case-based sessions and hands-on workshops, with a focus on common clinical problems
  • Evidence-based medicine sessions and expert tips on improving the health of patients and communities

Fellowship Opportunities

  • Sports medicine, geriatrics, and palliative care fellowship programs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area

Minnesota License

  • Minnesota permit and licensure application fee paid

DEA Registration

  • DEA fee reimbursed during residency

Exams

  • Reimbursement for the USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX-USA Level 3 exams if taken during residency
