Preparation for Residency Program

The Preparation for Residency Program (PRP) has been suspended for 2012-13.

We are meeting with community partners and key stakeholders to consider development of new models of training and health care career development.

The Background

In 2010, the University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine and Community Health was asked to develop a first-of-its-kind training program to help refugee physicians get back in to the practice of medicine.

Why? There were estimated to be 200+ refugee physicians in Minnesota who had not been able to return to practice. Many belonged to the state's most underserved communities and retraining could help them get back to work in the communities that needed them most.

How? The Preparation for Residency Program (PRP) launched as a seven-month training program for international medical graduates seeking U.S. clinical experience. Training included exposure to U.S. medical education and three months each of inpatient and ambulatory family medicine.
